Since its foundation in 2003, WavEC has established a pioneering path in the marine renewable energy sector, both in Portugal and beyond. With 20 years of commitment, we have supported Europe's marine renewable energy growth, nurtured future innovators, and disseminated offshore renewable energy knowledge while shaping perceptions and embracing change.

In 2016, WavEC ventured into offshore aquaculture, initiating numerical modeling of aquaculture structures. This step was a response to understanding the significance of offshore aquaculture in the future of the Blue Economy. Subsequently, WavEC engaged in designing new offshore cages for Norwegian clients. This dedication led to supporting the introduction of salmon fish farming in Portugal in 2017 and in Morocco the following year.

In 2005, Pro-Drone emerged as WavEC's first spin-off, focusing on wind turbine inspection and monitoring utilizing UAVs (drones). Additionally, WavEC initiated its activities in ocean engineering solutions by conducting tests of anti-corrosive painting on an offshore installation in Norway.

The Wave Energy Center rebranded to WavEC Offshore Renewables and launched a new logo, signaling its widened expertise encompassing offshore wind energy in addition to its existing focus on wave energy.

WavEC had participated in the DEMOWFLOAT project, which demonstrated offshore wind technology, WindFloat, in Póvoa de Varzim, Portugal, under the FP7 of the EU. The testing of the WindFloat prototype began in Aguçadoura in 2011 led by Principle Power, EDP, Repsol, Portugal Ventures, and A. Silva Matos from 2011 to 2016.

In 2004, WavEC initiated the refurbishment of the Pico Pilot Plant in the Azores, overcoming challenges to enable a decade of operation. Support extended to the 2MW AWS, a wave energy project offshore Póvoa do Varzim, Portugal. Our commitment to supporting ocean energy on an international scale is further demonstrated through our role as the technical secretariat at IEA-OES. This dedication expanded to education through projects like WAVETRAIN, developing the next generation of wave energy researchers and showcasing WavEC's multifaceted role in renewable energy development.
