Windfloat could create 8,000 jobs (AICEP Portugal / Portugal Offer, 26/09/2011)
The WindFloat structure is being assembled at Lisnave shipyards in Setúbal, and will be submerged off the Povoa de Varzim coast. The aim is to help revive various sectors in the national economy" such as the "construction and marine repair industry," and open up a prospect of thousands of new jobs. At a European level, the industry is forecast to create 100,000 jobs in the medium term. Once installed offshore the "WindFloat" will be "monitored" for two years, "to track its performance," João Gonçalo Maciel said.
From 2014, EDP, which has secured marketing rights for the technology, aims to build a mini-park of five units, as a larger scale proof of concept. Two years thereafter the plan is to market WindFloat commercially. The EDP investment is made in a partnership with the Principle Power Inc. of the US, the Vestas a Danish turbine manufacturer, A. Silva Matos SA a Portuguese engineering firm, and InovCapital S.A the state owned venture capital fund.
