 Follow us:

The wavetrain2 project (www.wavetrain2.eu) is a multinational Initial Training Network (ITN) funded under the FP7-People program, in order to face the wide range of challenges that industrial-scale wave energy implementation faces in the near future, focusing on technical issues, from hydrodynamic and PTO (Power Take-Off) design, to instrumentation issues and energy storage and cost reduction show to be critical for successful deployment. On the other hand, also non-technical “barriers”, typically less tangible difficulties related to legal issues (licensing, conflicts of use, EIA procedures, grid connection, regional differences) and the non-sufficient representation of socio-economic benefits of the sector, will be dealt with, as they are seen as a major obstacle for fast implementation on a European scale. The network consists of 13 European partner institutions and 17 associated entities, from research units and device developers to project developers and consultants.

Life-cycle activity clusters of the Wavetrain2 formal (dark) and associate (light) partners. The grouping is meant to reflect the expected specialised research activity fields during a typical life-cycle of a wave energy development project. Central topic is the product of such development, namely the actual prototype development and monitoring. Institutions actually requesting researcher-month within an activity are indicated in bold. Solid lines indicate already existing or obligatory collaborations in the work plan, dashed lines indicate potential and desirable collaborations encouraged by the project implementation.

The contents of the work plan is structured into 9 work packages, in each of which it is expected to
achieve a significant advance of the state-of-the art within the Wavetrain2 activities:
WP 1: Non-linear and survival hydrodynamic modelling (profiles 1-3)
WP 2: On-line control strategies and components (profiles 4-5)
WP 3: Design of electrical underwater connections and substation (profiles 6-7)
WP 4: Analysis and development of new and improved concepts and components
(profiles 8-13)
WP 5: Engineering, analysis and monitoring of full-scale and prototype plants
(performance, safety and environmental impacts) (profiles 14-19)
WP 6: Offshore & Naval Aspects (profiles 20-22)
WP 7: Wave resource and forecast (profiles 23-24)
WP 8: Tank testing (profiles 25-26)
WP 9: Public policies and socio-economic and environmental impacts (profiles 27-29)
