The CLIMAREST project integrates multiple expertise into a holistic approach to develop a toolbox designed to establish guidelines for ecosystem restoration and enhance climate resilience in coastal communities. The concept is to develop, test, and optimise a modular toolbox that integrates expert knowledge, scientific information, multilevel stakeholder and community involvement, ecosystem service improvement analysis, cost-benefit analysis, priority of actions, and custom-designed protocols for restoring and monitoring multiple coastal habitats.
From Svalbard in the north to Madeira in the south, the variety of environmental conditions and restoration needs of the five demonstration sites will provide different restoration scenarios with particular specificities in terms of biodiversity, pressures and threats, ecosystem services, and stakeholders, which will create a unique opportunity to develop a modular toolbox that integrates common and specific tools for each restoration scenario into a collective framework.
WavEC's main contribution to the CLIMAREST project will be leading WP5, "Future financial mechanisms and replication". In this WP the main goals are to identify key environmental and socio-economic data that will allow to build roadmaps and strategy to scale up the restoration actions, assess and catalogue restoration costs and socio-economic benefits, improve the existent finance and funding options and identifying novel sources of financial support. Finally, this WP will prepare an Action Plan for replication sites and develop a strategic framework to facilitate the replication across Europe.
