Board of Directors

António Sarmento
President of the Board of Directors
Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), post-graduation course in Fluid Mechanics – option Turbomachinery (von Karman Institute, Brussels, Belgium) and Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering (IST). Associate professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Instituto Superior Técnico retired since the summer of 2014, active in the field of wave energy research for more then three decades and Director of the Board since its foundation.

Ana Brito Melo
Executive Director
Ana Brito e Melo holds a PhD (2000) and a Master (1995) in Mechanical Engineering and a first degree in Civil Engineering (1992) from the IST (Instituto Superior Técnico) of the Technical University in Lisbon. Ana has more than 20 years of experience in wave energy, starting from tank tests and numerical modelling, towards technology assessment, site selection and feasibility studies. She became Executive Director of WavEC in January 2012. She is further responsible for running the secretariat and dissemination of the OES (Implementing Agreement on Ocean Energy Systems of the International Energy Agency), since 2002.

Communication and Dissemination

Janete Gonçalves
Communication Manager
Degree in Social and Cultural Communication at the Universidade Católica de Lisboa. Janete Gonçalves started to work for WavEC since the start, in 2003. She is responsible for all communication and dissemination activities within the WavEC and its projects.

Economy and Industry

José Cândido
PhD, Head of the Economy and Industry Area
Degree in Oceanography/Meteorology at Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). José started his research activity initially focused on wave climate and wave energy resource assessment and afterwards on modelling of wave energy devices. At WavEC he is a senior researcher and project manager in offshore renewable energy projects.

Marta Silva
Project Manager, Economy and Industry
Degree in Environmental Sciences and Technology by Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, and MSc in Sustainable Energy Systems, at the University of Edinburgh. Marta is working on the development of methodologies for design, monitor and update Roadmaps and other tools in the area of marine renewables.

Miguel Lopes
PhD, Head of the Monitoring and Technology area
Miguel Lopes Holds a MSc in Civil Engineering and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico related to tank testing of Wave Energy Converters. Miguel has been working in offshore renewable energy projects since 2006. Leading a team of 5 engineers/researchers at WavEC, he is involved in the project development, management and implementation of several projects and coordinates the Technology and Monitoring team.

Pedro Pires
PhD, Project Engineer, Robotics and Control
PhD and MSc in Mechanical Engineering at IST in 2006, has worked for several years in research in robotics and holds a PhD in robot surgery. He has joined WavEC in 2013 to work on control, robotics and electronics issues.

Paulo Chainho
MSc, Project Engineer, Electrical Components and Instrumentation
Master degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering, with specialization in Energy, at Instituto Superior Técnico, where he has done research on grid integration of offshore renewable energy. Paulo is working in the monitoring and technology department with focus on electrical components and instrumentation.

Pedro Vicente
PhD, Project Engineer, Maritime Operations and Moorings
PhD in Sustainable Energy Systems at IST, in the area of Mooring Systems Analysis for Wave Energy. He has been working in this field since 2008. He has joined WavEC in 2015 as a consultant in the area of Maritime Operations and Moorings.

MSc, Project Engineer, Electrical Cables and Moorings
MSc in Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering from University of Rostock and a BSc in Mechanical Engineering from TU Braunschweig. Kilian joined WavEC in 2016 to work on the development of umbilical design tools and subsea technology.

Teresa Simas
PhD, Head of the Marine Environmental and Public Policies Area
Degree in Marine Biology and Fisheries at the Universidade do Algarve and masters and PhD in Environmental Sciences at the Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Teresa is the coordinator of the environmental team and research projects on marine environmental assessment.

PhD, Head of the Numerical Modelling Area
Degree, masters and phd in Mechanicl Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico. Specialist for Hydrodynamics of wave energy and floating structures, with experience of around 10 years in the field.
